Oh my gosh!!! What a wonderful day, we started the day with MK Haley, a real-life Disney Imagineer. MK started out our day telling us what she does; she helps designs rides at Disney. She showed us specifically what goes into making different elements of rides and what considerations go into it as well. She truly had all of the SciGirl teachers and students entranced (especially Ms. Brynn). MK Haley challenged the girls to work collaboratively to work on the 'Marshmallow Challenge'. Girls were asked to build the tallest tower, with certain parameters, but she was really looking to see how the girls collaborated.
Next, we took a short lunch break, and then got right back into things. We had the girls make predictions and explanations with how certain items worked in a vacuum tube. Girls observed how marshmallows, shaving cream, and balloons reacted in a vacuum. After seeing how all these reacted in a similar manner we discussed the why--why these items react this way. Please ask your girls for the explanation or check out the following link: https://www.stevespanglerscience.com/lab/experiments/easter-science.
Later the girls were given an engineering challenge that aligned with what MK taught them earlier in the day. The girls had to build a tower with size requirements, that could hold mass. We chose the winner based on the following equation (Mass tower could hold/Mass of tower)--so the lighter the actual tower the better. The first place tower could hold an astounding 32 lbs.
Tomorrow is the Seacrest Wolf Preserve--make sure your girls are at the lab at 8am (pick-up 5 pm), and are wearing long pants and closed toed shoes. We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!
