Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Not exactly but we began the day with a visit to Novey Animal Hospital where Dr. Patricia Novey and her staff served as hosts. Upon our arrival, we took a group photo in front of the hospital marquee with a very special message: "Our kittens love Sci-Camp girls. They're purrfect." Divided into three groups, we learned about disease prevention and treatment with Shane, the importance and duties of the reception staff with Brittany, and intake diagnosis and dietary nutrition with Sam. Each girl was allowed to conduct a sample heart worm test as well. Who knew how busy an animal hospital can get as we witnessed one animal be spayed and then transferred to another table for a dental extraction!!! But we left just in time for a once in a lifetime chance to view the newest magnet at the Maglab, which also happens to be the world's strongest FT-ICR mass spectrometer at 21 Tesla. This behind-the-scenes tour was a treat from the amazing Dr. Amy McKenna, a petroleum chemist here at the NHMFL. She then provided an awesome hands-on chemistry activity on oil dispersion. What a perfect ending to a "purrfect" day. It is hard to believe but the week is half done. Move over Green Giant - the Sci-Girls hit the Fresh From Florida Garden tomorrow.
