SciGirls I 2015 Day Six

We're Back! So excited we were to make a return to the Tallahassee Animal Services Center. An amazing thanks goes out to Dr. Rachel Barton and her wonderful staff for a great day of exploring the offerings of this facility. We began the morning with an introduction to the different programs found at the ASC and their goals: (1) increase adoptions, (2) decrease euthanasia, (3) increase spaying and neutering, and (4) expand educational opportunities. The Leon County ASC is an open admission facility which means they cannot turn animals away. In fact, they actually took in 5,004 animals. The adoption rate was 43.3%, live releases were 59.2%, and 41.4% were euthanized(possibly as a result of medical reasons, lack of room, or owner control issues). Dr. Barton presented interesting facts and suggestions for pet owners and those hoping to become pet owners: by law you cannot sell a puppy until it is at least 8 weeks old and monthly heartworm treatments are recommended for cats and dogs. It is also strongly recommended that if you are bitten by a cat, please seek medical attention as up to 80% of cat bites become infected. Not only did we sit for a very informative session, but we also had the opportunity to suit up for an actual neutering procedure. From there we had interactive experiences with heartworm testing, zoonotic diseases, and animal control emergency response. But what was the coolest part of the day you might ask - the oh so cuddly, fluffy, and cute puppies and cats that are just waiting to be adoption. Don't hesitate if you are looking for a pet for your home! The ASC is the place to go. Unfortunately this ends our animal experiences this year, but get your tablet ready as we gear up for the world of technology.
