Sci Girls I Day Six

Extraordinary is the word to describe our day!  We began with Tall Timbers, a hidden gem that all scientists at heart should want to discover.  This 4,000 acre research facility is nestled off of Highway 12 as you head to Thomasville and is home to scientists who are uncovering vasts amount of information ranging from the purpose of fire plots to assist in vegetation/habitat control, radio telemetry in quail tracking, and land conservation in general.  Tall Timbers is home to various species of birds, mammals, and reptiles.  Our wonders included witnessing Mr. Jim Cox net and band a Bachman Sparrow; tracking "quail" nests with Kellie Phillips; and discussing controlled burns and holding/petting snakes with Kim Sash.  Kim and Jim provided their biological expertise with an introductory tour of the land, but a special thanks goes out to Georgia Ackerman who facilitated the entire experience for us and provided us with a little watermelon refreshment before we departed for the Maglab.  "The Outdoor Experience" was one of two activities presented to us by Mr. Donald Gray upon our arrival.  Have you ever sat 10 minutes outside and simply listened to your environment?  Believe it or not, there is a direct correlation between the changes in environment and your physical body.  These exercises in observing inhabitable space continued with an exercise in seeing and hearing in which the girls wore blind folds and utilized ear plugs.  Let's just say that some of the walls in the MagLab took a beating!   Sci Girls are in the discovery mode so look out Tallahassee Police Department and Florida Center for Interactive Media, as we roll your way.
