SciGirls I 2015 Day Five

It is hard to believe, but we have finished the first week of Sci Girls I 2015!  Sci Girls have truly rocked this week out and literally rocked it out this morning starting out with the Rock Quarry in Attapulgus.  A special thanks to Mr. Howard Kirk who took us to a new BASF mining site where the girls uncovered shark teeth, manatee bones, fossilized shells, alligator teeth, sea urchin spines, and crystallized rocks.  BASF's Attapulgite mining operations encompass more than 18,000 acres in Florida and Georgia where their products are used in a wide range of applications from pet litter to pharmaceuticals. Other applications include oil and grease absorbents, pesticide or herbicide carriers, oil filtration, oil well drilling, paint and coating suspension agents, liquid fertilizer, liquid animal feed, catalyst support and cosmetics.  We must admit that not only was this hard work but it was hot as well.....but hey, Sci Girls never shy away from a challenge.  However, we do know when to seek refreshing alternatives and today we chose Wakulla Springs.  Around the 69 degree water, you could find Sci Girls testing, listening, frolicking, and riding the Wakulla Heron for a nice, cool boat tour in the springs.  Making special appearances during our tour today were the yellow crown night heron, the anhinga, the white ibis, water hemlock, the osprey, the snowy egret, a bald cypress tree that is over 500 years old, and alligators.  What brings the biggest smile to Sci Girls faces?  The truly divine and decadent taste of the lodge ice cream was a perfect way to end the week!  Rest up Animal Service Center - here we come!!!!!!
