We're off and running with Week 2 of Sci Girls. Although the rain altered our plans a bit, we had an amazing day that began with a trip to the North Florida Research and Educational Center run by the Institute of Food and Agricultural Science of the University of Florida. Dr. Nick Comerford (Center Director) welcomed us and expressed enthusiasm in having a group of young ladies who expressed an interest in science. A presentation entitled "Women in Agricultural Sciences" was spearheaded by Dr. Ann Blount (agronomy and genetics). She was joined by Dr. Holly Ober (wildlife science), Dr. Cheryl Mackowiak (soil and water quality), Dr. Sheeja George (microbiology), and Dr. Chris Bliss (forestry and soil science.) This session ended much too quickly, but not before we got a chance to take a trolley ride to some parts of the farm (which is actually 1000 acres) and see many of the ways in which the land is cultivated and used for research purposes. We anxiously boarded the vans to hit Blue Springs but we were rained out. This didn't stop our water testing however, as we improvised at the Splash Pad at Madison Park in Marianna. Did we forget to mention Milk and Honey (where the girls are fascinated by the bee and cow combination for a mascot)? As always, it was delicious. Tomorrow we put on our investigative hats at the TPD Crime Lab. Sci Girls are on the case!
