We kicked off this week with a tour of the Florida Caverns in Marianna, FL. This morning we arrived at the Florida Caverns State Park through some inclement weather. But, that didn't damper our underground cave tour! We were able to explore the beautiful caverns and learn about formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, cave curtains, "soda straws," flow stones, and columns. Our tour guide, James, gave us a very informative tour and even shared his tip on how to remember the difference between stalaCtites (C for ceiling) and stalaGmites (G for ground.) We also got to learn the history of how the caverns got to be a tourist location, dating back to the Great Depression. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was developed to dig out the caverns for tourism use. The CCC was paid $1 per day of work! Our girls could not believe it, but thanks to the efforts of the CCC, the majestic caverns are available for public exploration.
Before we headed back to the MagLab, we stopped at a "do it yourself" frozen yogurt café, Milk and Honey. The girls enjoyed themselves exploring new technologies of 3D television and sharing each other's scientific and mathematic knowledge on whiteboards.
It's amazing how SciGirls can keep themselves entertained on a rainy day!
