Sci Girls 2 1st Day!

Today we were off to a good start! Our first activity was a challenge which was the girls needed to put themselves in order by birthday, but without talking! We know this bunch are exceptional communicators because they got it near perfect on the first try!

Then we did a getting-to-know-you activity with all the SciGirls and got to learn interesting facts about each other. We also learned that it's not very easy to toss a beach ball very far! :-)
Lunch was a special treat with an opportunity to talk to real women scientists and discuss their fields of work. The "Ladies of Science" luncheon included Whitney George, Chelsea Evans, and Gillian Canning from Florida Center for Interactive Media. Also present was Catherine Bray from City of Tallahassee, Amy McKenna from the NHMFL, and Chelsea Wilson from Rethink Energy Florida.

The afternoon was spent with Jackie Zimmerman from the Department of Environmental Protection. The girls learned how to test water samples for nitrate levels, dissolved oxygen, pH levels, and turbidity.

It was a great first day! The girls were able to make new friends and do some real science. We look forward to our visit to the Animal Shelter tomorrow!
