SciGirls I 2015 Day Two

A Play Date – are you serious!  Today Sci Girls I had a chance to meet and play with the first group of Sci Girl Minis!  Off we were to the FSU Biology Department for a tour of the facilities and an activity on DNA extraction of strawberries. DNA contains all of the instructions an organism needs to live and can be found in a cell's nucleus.  Not only did we have a chance to have a hands-on experience, but we also got a chance to uncover a little about our Sci Girls scientists who took different paths to uncover and enjoy their love of science.  A special thanks to Lauren Cole and Katherine Easterling for taking time out of their busy summer school class schedule to make our morning sweet before we returned to the Maglab for a chemistry presentation by Dr. Amy McKenna.  What makes this Petroleum chemist so awesome????? Our interactive experience with her involved creating a mock oil spill in which the Sci Girls then had to figure out what material would be the best to clean it up:  cotton balls, paper, nylon stockings, or bird feathers.   No one wanted this excitement to end, but we needed to find out about the types of food that can be grown right here in the great state of Florida with a visit to the “Fresh From Florida Garden.”  Today we learned about the Florida Muscadine Grape or as we commonly call them "scuppernongs".   Here are some interesting facts that we found out about this wonderful fruit:  they contain lots of fiber, manganese, and antioxidants; they are very resistant to disease and insect pests; and they can get as large as a golf ball. A because Sci Girls loves the garden so much, as we departed, Sundiata was firmly securing our very own Sci Girls muscadine plant that we know will flourish and produce a great treat for others to enjoy.  We were also treated to some superb and decadent dishes prepared by Chef Paula Kendrick.  Four words - "Roasted Potatoes with Rosemary!!!!"  The visit was ended with a short presentation on becoming a dietician which is a different yet awesome field of science. Kudos to Sean Doran and Kristin Hatakka for a great afternoon.  Where did all of our energy go?  Time to reboot for the tall adventure awaiting these girls of science!
