After a trek to Freeport, FL, we arrived at the E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center. We immediately went on a wetlands trail hike. During the hike, we explored two different types of ecosystems: long leaf pine woodland and wetlands. During the hike the girls identified abiotic and biotic factors and examined animals living in a creek. The girls identified different skulls. Some of the notable things we encountered were turtles, evidence of beaver activity, spiders, evidence of woodpeckers, and the different life stages of long leaf pine trees. After the hike we cooled down with an informational video about E.O. Wilson and the history and goals of the nature center.
After a short lunch to energize ourselves, our wonderful guide, Turtle Bob, helped us get hands on with several species of aquatic and land turtles. He showed us how to tag and take measurements of turtles new to the center. The girls learned the importance of preserving habitats for native creatures.
Our last stop was the exhibit room, where several girls were able to hold and "wear" cornsnakes. Unfortunately, we had to head home, but our girls could've definitely spent all night there!
Special thanks to Lady Bug Lauren, Turtle Bob, Pine Tree Paul, and June Bug Jenn for a wonderful day!
