Today was a busy day! We kicked it off with a magnet levitation activity here at the MagLab. The girls used various methods to try to get their spinning top to levitate. Some girls were more successful than others, but all girls had a fun time trying it out! We ended that activity with a scientific discussion of processes of science. After refueling our bodies with lunch, we headed to the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab.
At the marine lab, we started off with the touch tanks! The girls got to hold fiddler and horseshoe crabs, snails, coral, sea urchin, sea stars, and even touch sting rays. We then moved on to view (not touch) sharks, sea turtles, red fish, gar, sea bass, octopi, electric rays, lion fish, and so much more!
After observing animals, we went out to the docking area where the marine lab collects their specimens. The girls were able to explore smaller creatures like barnacles, mini crabs, various worms, and other small specimens by lifting and examining substrates hanging from the dock. They really got into this!
We ended the day with seining! The girls fished and examined more species including puffer fish, pinfish, silver sides, needle fish, pipe fish, and so much more. Make sure to view the pictures to see the plethora of fiddler crabs on the shore!
Another great day in the books for SciGirls 2! We came, we saw, we seined! See you tomorrow!
