Sci Girls I Day Seven

Are you fascinated by the CBS series CSI?  Well guess what?  Tallahassee Police Department is home to a forensic science unit of their own where they process 3,000 to 5,000 pieces of evidence for fingerprints a month, utilize the AFIS system, and operate on the M.O.M. (motivation, operations, and means) theory to help solve crimes.  Not only were we introduced to new methods of fingerprinting, but we also learned that there are three races used for identification:  African, Asian, and European.  The blood spatter station proved to be a hit as well and students learned how the velocity of a bullet can affect the means by which blood exits a body.  Sci Girls applause goes to Shawn Yao and his staff who initiated our group with a truly informative session.  We then raced across town to meet with Barbara Hines and throw atlatls.  Kudos to Ria and Marisa who tied with throws of 60 feet.  Our final adventure of the day was at the Florida Center for Interactive Media with Andrew Dennard and staff who once again collaborated to incorporate the voices and sounds of the Sci Girls into their own video game - Deep Sea Dive.  Not only did we create an awesome game, but we also watched a TED video on bioluminescence.  This was a  real eye-opening video.  We ended our day with a thank you and headed back to the MagLab.  Can you tell us how to get to WFSU?  It's okay, we'll find the way before ending our day with Atkins tomorrow.
